Kinja'd!!!

I have the ABS light lit up and the 4WD light blinking on the Escape. Any ideas?

one thing that was odd is that I drove about 20 minutes last night and had nothing, then on the ride back it happened right from the start. my wife said it comes and goes over the last couple days since i put it back together.

could I have damaged the speed sensor during my last battle with that POS?

Find the wheel speed sensor and investigate!

I don't know the Escape that well, but I know that limp mode in my Crosstrek when I had it lit up the AWD and ABS lights. I'd be willing to bet if you turn it back off and then on the lights will disappear. You might want to pull the code out of it and see what the CEL is throwing.

Clear the codes and see if they come back.

Yeah, chances are it’s a wacky sensor somewhere. Again, different vehicles, but the same thing happened in my Crosstrek. Turned out to be a cam position sensor. Obviously not saying this is the reason, but I got limp mode out of the blue at random times too.

Either that, or you need an Exorcism.

I think Stapleface has nailed it. Once more into the breach you go!

Could be a sensor issue, but double check all of your tire pressures first.

dammit. I thought i was close to defeating this thing.

Check the fluid level. In my truck (Mazda, same thing as a Ranger), the ABS light will come on if the brake fluid level is a bit low and do something to slosh the fluid around, tripping the sensor. The back seal on the master cylinder has developed a slow leak and I have to top it off once a month or so.

I’m going with ABS sensor (90%) or possibly the ABS module (10%). The “4WD” is probably illuminated because of cause & effect — the AWD system (like most) probably uses braking to accomplish its goals and without a fully-functioning brake system, it’ll consider itself faulty as well.

Totally sounds like a snapped tone ring on one of the CV Axles:/, best case it's just a wheel speed sensor

This happens to escapes all the time, we keep one just to show customers. rust builds up underneath the ring until it snaps from the pressure

I know some already suggested it but I second the possibility of a wheel speed sensor. That should be common to both systems and the kind of thing you would reasonably expect to fail after a decent chunk of miles. I’ve had the same issue before. . .

yea i’ve been watching a couple youtubes videos of people replacing them. this sounds really likely considering we were doing a lot of banging around back there. the ones in the videos look just like that. WTF is it with Escapes and rusting like their parked in the ocean

How old is it? I've seen this on another Escape and it just needed a new battery.

I just had the same issue with my Sonoma there was a ABS/Speed sensor cable that had somehow frayed apart. 50 bucks for the part and only made my knuckles bleed twice!

I’e never heard of a wheels speed sensor having an effect on AWD. Have you tested the AWD to see if it’s working?

i dont really know how to test it, theres not really anywhere to go where I could easily get wheel spin. it doesn;t seem to be driving differntly
